Numbness, tingling & nerve pain

Pins and needles, burning pain and reduced sensation can have different causes. We look at the distribution of symptoms and any weakness to decide which evaluation is appropriate.

Plan an English consultation

Where and when do you feel it?

One hand, several fingertips, both feet or a line of pain down an arm or leg can point to different problems. Nerve compression, peripheral neuropathy and problems around the spine are possibilities; the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

Tell us if symptoms wake you at night, follow a posture or activity, or are gradually spreading. Weakness, dropping objects, falls and loss of balance are useful details. Bring information about diabetes, alcohol use, injuries and current medicines.

What nerve tests can tell us

A neurological examination checks strength, sensation and reflexes. Blood tests may be selected to look for contributing conditions, such as diabetes or vitamin B12 deficiency. Not everyone with tingling needs imaging or electrical testing.

Nerve conduction studies measure how electrical signals travel along selected nerves. Electromyography (EMG) evaluates electrical activity in muscles. At our clinic, these tests may help investigate peripheral nerve or muscle problems when the history and examination indicate a need.

Results are considered together with your symptoms and examination. If symptoms persist, follow-up or other tests may be needed even after an initially reassuring result.

Treatment depends on the reason

The plan may address a contributing condition, reduce pressure on an affected nerve or treat troublesome nerve pain. Recovery and symptom control vary with the cause and severity; a test cannot promise that sensation will fully return.

Protect areas with reduced sensation from burns and injuries. If you have diabetes or foot wounds, mention this when arranging your appointment. Ask for test-specific preparation rather than changing medicines yourself.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

A little preparation helps.

  • Mark affected areas and note whether symptoms are on one or both sides.
  • Bring relevant blood tests, scans and a medicine list.
  • Tell the clinic about a pacemaker, implanted device or blood-thinning medicine before electrical testing.
